What is Kyrgyz Traditional Knowledge?

Traditional Knowledge

consists of the practical methods and approaches to tackling everyday tasks which have been developed and polished over the centuries.

It contains the deep wisdom of people, their understanding of the surrounding world and livelihood.

It is passed on from generation to generation in the form of tales, epics, songs, legends, stories and simple tips.

21 century is the century of new technologies and innovations, more and more new means and methods for any sphere of human activity are invented every day. «Better, faster, easier, newer» is the motto of a new time and new generation. The newest technologies and discoveries have made fantastic future real - today there are so many opportunities for any ideas, innovations and intentions!

However, at the same time, becoming more oriented to new methods and innovative discoveries, and pursuing for something new and unexplored, we miss knowledge that is already exists - knowledge that took in wisdom and kindness of old centuries, beauty and harmony of the universe.

What do we lose? And what comes in return? Can we stop a swift flow of time and reverse it? Is the striving for new knowledge and neglecting the old one righteous? The farther we are ahead into the future, the more we forget our roots and lose the knowledge of past times. However many questions already have answers, which congregated during many years and transmitted from generation to generation. In particular, it refers to the Kyrgyz people, people with rich and outstanding history.

How can we preserve and pass on to next generations the good old knowledge and traditions carrying peace, prosperity and harmony? The harmony of a man with the land where he lives and nature that surrounds him? How do we keep this knowledge and pass it to future descendants to make sure that the forests are not eliminated, the rivers are not dried up and the grass is still green, the thread between generations is not broken? In an attempt to answer these and other questions we have conceived an idea of traditional knowledge - knowledge of our ancestors which are useful and important today as well as in ancient times, when they appeared.

Kyrgyz traditional knowledge springs from the experience of nomadic life.  It is knowledge about raising cattle on natural fodder, building and decorating one's home, the yurt, and cooking plain yet healthy and nutritious food in nomadic conditions in the absence of agricultural products. This knowledge was transmitted using the age-old system, when a mother taught her daughter, and a father taught his son.

Over many decades of forced settlement knowledge of our ancestors have been forgotten, erased, and almost lost. There are very few people who have been keeping traditional knowledge and experience that can be shared with us. Along with the difficulties faced by our country at present, a little attention is paid to issues such as the accumulation, preservation and dissemination of the Kyrgyz traditional knowledge, practices and experience. We realize that this is a big gap and try to fill it up, as now more than ever we lack knowledge of our ancestors to preserve peace and harmony, unity and prosperity of our society.

Kyrgyz Traditional Knowledge is the world which preserves the original wisdom of generations and times, the world of so many interesting, unexplored and attractive. We'll try to start a fascinating journey through time, which, we believe, will give us new opportunities and ideas, broaden horizons and provide new knowledge.
