Peer Learning of Kyrgyz Local Governments on Conflict Management in the Kyrgyz Republic

On February 1, 2011 RDF has launched new project on peer learning of local government representatives on conflict management and mitigation in areas prone to ethnic conflicts. 

 

Project aim

to strengthen the role of the border ayil okmotu to manage inter-ethnic conflicts stemming from the use of water, pastures, land, non-timber and other natural resources.

 

Project objective

to facilitate and assist in peer learning of the best practices and local knowledge between the target ayil okmotu to manage inter-ethnic conflicts over natural resources, their synthesis and  developing recommendations for local government and public authorities.

 

Project area

RDF has selected five target ayil okmotus in Batken rayon, Batken oblast, that are located on the border areas of Kyrgyz Republic and Republic of Tajikistan: Ak-Say, Ak-Tatyr, Kara-Bak, Samarkandek and Tort-Kul.

 

Main project activities

- Mutual exchange and dissemination in target AO best local knowledge for conflict management over natural resources;

- Conduct a rapid assessment of target AO to understand local conditions and conflict-protection of natural resources, meetings with local community;

- Information campaigns and seminars for members and local leaders in targeted AO, forming groups, exchange visits and experience;

- A national workshop involving all stakeholders, including representatives of the authorities to discuss the existing problems and their solutions based on best practices.

 

Project expected results

According to the results of the project there will be collected best practice examples that have proven their effectiveness and ability to apply to other aiyl okrugs which will be included in recommendations for local governments and public authorities on conflict management over natural resources.

 

Project funding organization

The prejct is funded by The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world.
