Honoring Kyrgyzstan's Arts and Cultural Heritage

Kyrgyzstan is a mosaic of amazingly varied cultural influences and traditions, from the mix of indigenous Kyrgyz, Central Asian and Slavic ethnic groups to the synthesis of experience as a Soviet Republic a newly independent country. Life in Bishkek is utterly unlike how pastoral Kyrgyz live, but both are integral to the country. All of these and other influences profoundly affected how artists viewed their world and created their works. ESTE provides an accessible way to experience Kyrgyzstan's past and present art scene with an understanding of the cultural and historical context for the artists' individual creativity. It supports the continued development of a vibrant local arts scene, while also providing a way for those who value art to make a contribution to support those who fostered Kyrgyzstan's art scene in previous decades.

What does ESTE organize?

  • Bi-monthly shows of different artists or types of arts and handicrafts. These events will be held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month.

  • These shows will be conducted in various locations. Explanatory presentations will be given in English and there will be opportunities to purchase art.

  • Targeted tours to artists' studios by request. See how art is created and hear different masters explain their inspiration and technique. Translation services will be provided. ESTE will cater to all interests.

  • Help with setting up individual and group art classes such as learning how to paint, to produce ceramics, use batik techniques for you and your kids.

  • Assistance in purchasing art. Want advice on different art from Kyrgyzstan? What will go well in your house? ESTE is happy to help!

  • Other activities related to Kyrgyz culture and art per request (such as accompaniment to different museums in Bishkek and historical sites, providing you with professional guides)

Get connected to Kyrgyzstan's artistic traditions!

Who are we?

ESTE means "Remember" in Kyrgyz. ESTE is a non-commercial initiative that aims to give recognition to those who built Kyrgyzstan's artistic traditions as well as active artists through demonstration of their works. ESTE also aims to provide support for artists and their families who no longer can produce art. The wrenching change of independence left a generation of artists without state support and unable to fend for themselves in the new market. These artists developed Kyrgyzstan's artistic traditions for decades. ESTE seeks to help pay society's debt to them. In addition, ESTE supports efforts to preserve Kyrgyzstan's cultural heritage.

We rely on help from students, young artists and fans of Kyrgyz art. At the same time we want to disseminate information and knowledge on Kyrgyz history, culture, traditions and arts.

How can you purchase the pieces of arts?

If you are interested in the pieces of arts, supported by ESTE Remembrance Initiative, and would like to purchase the reproductions, photos, handicrafts, you can directly contact us by e-mail or come to our office. In our office you can see some copies of reproductions and photos and collect the complete list of the pieces of arts on the offer. Alternatively, you may contact us by e-mail and register your interest in specific pieces. We then try to find the most appropriate way to deliver your order to you. Unfortunately, we can not provide the soft copies of reproductions and photos for the copyright reasons.

Also you can find some of the pieces of art on our web-site.
