Kyrgyz Traditional Ecological Knowledge for Community-Based Protection of Snow Leopard and its Habitat

Project Goal

Project goal - to preserve and increase the snow leopard population in Kyrgyzstan, improve their habitat through the revived traditional knowledge and increased public awareness about these rare species of Northern and Western Tien Shan through engaging local communities in their protection.

The project is funded by Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF), USA, with consulting assistance of the Christensen Fund (USA).

Project implementation site: Kalba rural municipality (Talas District, Talas Region) and Chon-Kemin rural municipality (Kemin District, Chui Region).

Duration of the project: November 2015 - November 2016.

Project partners:

Talas Territorial Department of the State Agency on Environment Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic;

Talas regional state administration of the Kyrgyz Republic;

Local government bodies in the pilot communities;

Secretariat of the Global Programme for Conservation of the Snow Leopard and its Ecosystems;

Regional public education departments of Talas and Kemin districts of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic;

Center for Support of Civil Initiatives of Talas region "Aikol".

Main activities

1. Gathering and analysis of Kyrgyz traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) on peaceful coexistence of local communities with the snow leopard and its habitat through involving members of Pastoral Network "Kyrgyz El Akyl Kazyna" (KEAK) in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and abroad - in the areas of the snow leopard concentration; 

2. Involvement of the two pilot communities in Talas and Chui regions to enhance initiatives aimed at formation of Jamaats - to protect and preserve such natural wealth as the snow leopard and its habitat;

3. Production of informative materials on the snow leopard and its habitat based on the collected information and TEK such as folklore, tales, legends and stories of custodians of TK about importance of the snow leopard for the conservation of biodiversity;

4. Conducting the Snow Leopard awareness campaigns in two pilot communities through organizing: a summer camp for the youth - winners of school contests with the involvement of specialists of national parks; exchange visits and a local festival displaying KEAK exhibitions and the results of school contests; production of video materials with involvement of KEAK members; collaboration with local and national mass media;

5. Conducting in Bishkek a Snow Leopard Festival with broad participation of the Secretariat for the Snow Leopard in KR, partner organizations, Pastoralist Network KEAK, school contest winners, representatives of the two pilot communities in order to raise awareness at the national level about the initiatives of local communities for conservation of the snow leopard.

Desired outcome

RDF will publish the research findings of TEK about the snow leopard and its habitat, thus enhancing the public's attention to this issue and helpinf children and young people to develop a caring attitude to their natural environment;

Based on collaborative work with local communities, RDF will produce a social video and a cycle of interviews - to disseminate information on conservation of the snow leopard and its habitat;

RDF will involve in the project activities the pilot communities to enhance local initiatives on mobilizing Jamaatsto protect the snow leopard and its habitat;

RDF will conduct an information campaign to raise public awareness in the pilot communities on the snow leopard and its habitat, thus enhancing creation of preconditions for public responsibility for the safety of natural wealth of the local landscape;

RDF will arrange contests for students of local high schools; the winners will be invited to the youth summer camp with participation of representatives of the national parks;

RDF will organize a local festival devoted to the snow leopard with announcement of the results of children's contests, presentation of TK information materials, display of the KEAK exhibition, and discussion of local initiatives for the conservation of the snow leopard and its habitat.

RDF will organize exchange visits between the two pilot communities to enhance the development of local initiatives in the conservation of the snow leopard and its habitat;

RDF will hold a festival in Bishkek with the involvement of the Secretariat for the Snow Leopard to disseminate further the TEK, raise public awareness about the need to preserve and protect the snow leopard, and improve measures for the conservation of its ecosystems at the national level.
